THE PROGRAM
Since 1983, the Computer Professional Internship
program has provided companies with dedicated employees who work
on a contract basis while earning a degree in information and computer
sciences at accredited universities. This arrangement gives companies
high-quality, cost-effective workers, and the opportunity to train
employees in-house prior to hiring them on a permanent basis.
The program, administered by the Department of Information
Systems at Cal State L.A. provides practical work experience for
senior and graduate students from the departments of information
systems, computer science, and computer engineering at California
State University, Los Angeles; California Polytechnic University,
Pomona; and other California State University campuses.
Organizations such as Security Pacific Automation
Co., the city of Los Angeles, the Department of Water and Power,
and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works have all hired
consummate computer professionals from the program.
WHY IT WORKS
The stringent requirements for admission and
the rigorous nature of the Computer Professional Internship Program
makes the program successful. Students must be seniors, graduates,
or certificate students (in some cases juniors or recent graduates
may qualify); have a minimum a 3.0(B) grade point average; obtain
faculty recommendations; and pass interviews by the program director
and representatives of the host company.
If a company has a specific requirement, a search
is made for students with the background necessary to meet the need.
STUDENT COMMITMENT
Students usually are expected to work a full
40-hour week while completing their academic degree requirements
in the evening. This blending of practice and theory helps students
build a more extensive border base knowledge that characterizes
the true professional.
COMPANY COMMITMENT
Companies sign a master contract or purchase
order that is implemented when a student starts to work. The company
is billed only for days the student is actually on the job. Vacation
time earned is a fringe benefit paid by the Computer Professional
Internship Program. If for any reason the student does not meet
the requirements of the program, the company can dismiss the student
with one day's notice.
